Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist, is building Strandbeests—some the size of a small house and hundred-legged—that will survive only on the wet, packed sand between the ocean and dry land. They haven’t yet evolved completely for life unassisted, but they’re getting there, using simple brains and survival techniques.
