Hacking IKEA
There has been a bit of noise from design-minded folks that appreciate the pricetag, simplicity, and availability of IKEA products, but cringe at the idea of being prey to a design factory that soils classic designs with saccarine “homages”. Case-in-point, the Alvar Aalto stool with a redundant leg.
There’s a blog for IKEA-hacking ideas called… ikeahacker.
Here is an example (via notcot.org) that shows a hack to the Billy bookshelf. It’s an organic-looking form that is, interestingly enough, lime green. In my experience, lime green seems to a common color for denoting a parasitic design object. Here, it’s a hacked shelf feeding off an existing bookcase.
Here, it’s a parasitic building that is connected to the structure and infrastructure of an existing building.
