The National Heritage Museum in Lexington, MA is running a Raymond Loewy retrospective. When this French-born engineer's parents died in the influenza epidemic on 1918-19, he travelled to the United States to live with his brother. His first job was to do drawings for women's fashion advertising. He went on to become a fundamental founder of the industrial design profession and broke into graphic design with great success. Bright Blind by David Goligorsky

Those electric tea lights have all but replaced the traditional tea light candles in restaraunts and I don't really mind. The electric ones give you the whole unadulterated experience while adding safety, reducing waste products, and eliminating the chance of the candle getting extinguished. Makoto Hirahara designed this lamp for Mongoose that just looks like horizontal blinds. You can mount them on any wall and you adjust the intensity of light by turning the rod, just like with blinds on an actual window. No, it's not the same as having a window... but I'm thinking "cubicle window" or ...

Paul Rand (August 15, 1914 – November 26, 1996) was a graphic designer best known for creating the corporate identities of IBM, UPS, and the NeXT computer (the company founded by Steve Jobs after leaving Apple in 1985 with director Ross Perot!) Paul Rand is also known for writing the children's book "Little 1" with Ann Rand, which you can preview and buy at Amazon.

Kern Zip-Up by David Goligorsky

I always had a qualm with zip-ups due to the uneven spacing caused by the necessary rift in fabric to allow for the zipper mechanism. This zip-up from Veer looks good and provides a meta-definition of kerning. They should do the same thing with those terrible "gym" shorts with text across the rear. (via FFFFOUND!)

Maharam is a textile distributor with tons of great patterns. They have a very well-designed website to boot. Try out the Maharam Virtual Library on the sidebar... my favorite book there is "Textiles of the 20th Century," notably the Eames' "Circles 458310" pattern on page 3 and "Dot Pattern 458300" on page 4.

Creativity is as important in education as literacy by Eric Silva

So says Ken Robinson in an incredible talk (even by TED standards) on how education systems destroy the creativity of students, also noting "We have a huge vested interest in [education], partly because it's education that's meant to take us into this future that we can't grasp."
