There’s an article in today’s New York Times about Make It Right, Brad Pitt’s project to help rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. Pitt commissioned 13 firms to design sub-$150,000 houses (building costs will be covered by donations) that take into account environmental and safety issues pertinent to the Lower 9th Ward.

Some designs are more traditional than others. Many incorporate wide steps for congregating, as well as other gathering areas. Although all firms addressed the potential for flooding, different firms took different stances on how to best address environmental issues: “The population doesn’t want to live on stilts — and it’s expensive,” [Thomas Mayne of Morphosis] added. “These are simple houses for low-income people.”
