Photo of the Moment

28 May 2008 by David Goligorsky

I saw a video a while ago of motorcyclists and motorists driving in circles on a vertical wall with avid spectators dangerously perched atop this wall. It’s a simple trick. Just stay above a certain speed (tangential velocity) and your centripetal acceleration will provide ample normal force to keep you upright relative to the wall. I’m more amazed by the iron constitution these drivers must have to be spinning around in circles for so long. Then there’s the exceptionally shoddy-looking construction of this so-called “Wall of Death.” I am impressed by the trust that these spectators entrust to the structure and the questionable talents of the performers.

I am much more impressed by the image below (via ffffound!) showing a lion perched in the sidecar of a vehicle negotiating the Wall of Death.
