Ok, maybe it was reasonable to think we were being lazier than usual, because, let's face it, sometimes we are. However, the real explanation for the lack of posts is that more server silliness made our page cache misbehave. If you visited the front page in the past week, it didn't appear that there were any new posts. There were, though; there were! You need to catch up! RSS and email subscribers still received everything, so don't worry if you're reading this message in your favorite reader or email program; maybe you other folks ought to stay in the loop, too?

Antique Microscope Slides by David Goligorsky

Before the Royal Microscopical Society introduced the rectangular glass slides and cover sheets, a "slider" was made from a disk of ivory or bone that was hollowed out with the sample inside, held between sheets of transparent mica (wikipedia). The Nonist has a small collection of these Victorian-era sliders, which are incredibly beautiful even without a microscope. (via Monoscope)

Martin Greenfield, tailor by David Goligorsky

Fantastic short film by Galen Summer about Martin Greenfield, a bespoke tailor in Brooklyn. He immigrated from Germany in the late 1940's after the war and losing his family in a concentration camp. Persevering the rough neighborhood where his factory would be pillaged for the copper in his electrical wires, he has found himself making suits for many dignitaries, US Presidents included. He has also done ample work for the fantastic labels of Freeman's Sporting Club, Band of Outsiders, and Brooks Brothers, among others. A tastefully-shot documentary of an inspiring Gentleman. ...
