Honda’s Motocompo was a 49cc two-stroke scooter that was designed to fit into the trunk of the Honda City back in 1981-83. It folds up into a little rectangle and it really lovely. The ad campaign at the time featured London ska band, Madness, and the marketing photos are priceless.

Wes Anderson Commercial Starring Brad Pitt

The latest Wes Anderson commercial, this time for Japan’s SoftBank Mobile, involves a Mr. Brad Pitt in a yellow pith helmet fussing about during a particularly dense bit of action, strongly reminiscent of Jacques Tati’s 1953 Les Vacances de Monseieur Hulot. The song is Poupée de cire, poupée de son by France Gall.

Perpenduum regulars will note the use of the Citroën 2CV.

Keep Calm and Carry On

“Keep Calm and Carry On” was a sort of public service statement in England during World War II. Yes/No/Maybe has reproduced this phrase, which had been paired with the crown of King George VI. I’ve seen the print in a huge spectrum of colors and framed in a vast variety of frame style from modern to downright Victorian (no pun intended.)

The 1967 Citroen 2cv brochure for the Netherlands is fantastic. It defines utility and envisions heavy labor in a very attractive manner. It gives the impression that ownership of this vehicle will make dirty work clean and enable the owner to achieve complete and permanent euphoria. The car looks perfect and I admire the presentation of the same mustachioed gentleman embodying all archetype laborers. My favorite is the bank robber.
