  Check out this "record player" iPhone app. The author, Theodore Watson, threw it together in one morning. I really like projects that get the point across quickly.   However, Eric and I were recently talking about missing keyboard shortcuts, and I figure it's worth sharing. Add a "Zoom Window" Keyboard Shortcut on Mac OS X Open "System Preferences" Click "Keyboard & Mouse" Select the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab Click the "+" button to add a new shortcut Choose "All Applications" in the Application dropdown, type "Zoom" in the menu title field, and set your desired keyboard shortcut (I chose cmd-shift-M). Click "Add". Voilà. There does seem to be an outstanding issue in which this does not work properly in Firefox 3, but it works like a charm in every other app I've tried.

  So Google just released a beta version of their Chrome browser without offering software for Mac OSX and Linux users. That fact was the content of my previous post. This is one major example of companies doing their product testing in the marketplace. The trend of early adopters as unpaid software testers was one of the major messages in BusinessWeek innovation writer Bruce Nussbaum's interview with David Armano of Critical Mass (no, not the overly-political and generally-counter-productive bicycle thing.)   A new favorite blog of mine, A Continuous Lean, has a post on the shirts that Justin Long wear as he personifies the young and "edgy" personality of an Apple Computer. They are generally made by Steven Alan or Band of Outsiders, which are both labels that I admit a fondness for. Band of Outsiders has particularly excellent photo shoots, including a series with Jason Schwartzman that I had written about previously.   This clock by Christiaan Postma is fantastic. At first, it looks like a Sol LeWitt conceptual art piece. Then, you realize that some of the lines are turning to form the word of the hour. You can see the words forming and going back into chaos, which I guess tells you how far along you are in the hour. This part reminds me of the Mondaine "Don't Rush" wristwatch. Let's see this Christiaan Postma piece as a wristwatch! (...or an iPhone app.) (clock found via Pan-Dan)

  Paul Rand (August 15, 1914 – November 26, 1996) was a graphic designer best known for creating the corporate identities of IBM, UPS, and the NeXT computer (the company founded by Steve Jobs after leaving Apple in 1985 with director Ross Perot!) Paul Rand is also known for writing the children's book "Little 1" with Ann Rand, which you can preview and buy at Amazon.

  While the previous Braun Design/Dieter Rams post is still warm: The 2007 iPhone calculator GUI "borrows" heavily from the 1977 design of the Braun ET44 and ET66 calculators (ET = elektronischer taschenrechner = electronic calculator.) Data entry is done, but now I want to cull those who gave email addresses from those who gave snail mail addresses, for a couple of reasons.   At work, I'm in the middle of entering hundreds of addresses into Address Book. I'm happy with my custom template, and there isn't mechanism for multiple templates, so initially I resigned myself to Shift-Tabbing 7 times to navigate from the Last Name field to the Address field. However, after doing this for the first few entries, my fingers knew there had to be (and wanted) a more efficient way. I turned to AppleScript and Quicksilver. I'm not an ace AppleScripter. I have some coding experience in a variety of languages, but I'm not familiar enough with AppleScript to have gotten over ...
