ONull is written in Java and uses Processing as a graphical engine. Awesome vector generator that rasterizes an image to give you a vector output file. You can choose the squares, crosses, circles, etc. or you can import your own vector to use as the “pixels.” Excellent tool.

This is a photo from Playboy, June 1961. It shows George Nelson, Edward Wormley, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames, and Jens Risom casually seated next to their famed creations all in the same photo shoot. It’s just about 2010, which means nearly 50 years have come and gone from the time of that iconic photograph and nearly every recent architecture & design periodical I pick up is littered with Eames chairs inside, Bertoia chairs outside, and Nelson tables and clocks in every nook and cranny. They’re fantastic pieces and I am a staunch proponent of “timeless” design.

The image above has been passed around and passed around again. That’s not what this post is about. Instead, I hope some of the readers will post a comment with a punch list of designers that are our contemporaries. A group that you could envision sitting down for a photo shoot together. Perpenduum turns two

I know it’s been quiet on the Perpenduum front for a bit but it’s only because we’ve been so busy that we’ve even forgotten our birthday! Perpenduum was registered two years ago on August 21st, 2007.

(Birthday Cake from Andreas’ Flickr photostream. Take a look at his fantastic online portfolio. Particularly liking his video showing the most used words in the Billboard Top 5 during the years of each presidential administration from 1950 to 2006. He’s incredibly talented and a real Gentleman.)

Check out this “record player” iPhone app. The author, Theodore Watson, threw it together in one morning. I really like projects that get the point across quickly. It’s a build-to-think mode and sparks dialogue (like this blog post) that gets people thinking about how to use what’s around them.

I was looking for some wire sculpture examples and found these by Lisa Fedon. Besides the fact that I’m a big fan of Mr. Woody Allen, these sculptures are fantastic. I’m not sure how she achieved the shirt. Looks too delicate for wire mesh.

Gary Hustwit’s “Objectified” film

Gary Hustwit, the director known for his documentary film on the Swiss typeface, Helvetica, has just released a first glimpse of his latest work. He’s spent considerable time interviewing product design’s heads of state and put together Objectified.

I’m especially inspired because in just 90 seconds of preview, there were a few familiar faces. David Kelley, a co-founder of IDEO, is an alumnus from my graduate program and is a major part of the Stanford Design program and d.school. We have had the pleasure of visiting his incredible home, which was designed by Ettore Sottsass, and saw the garage, which houses part of his collection of fantastic vehicles. Bill Moggridge is another co-founder of IDEO and is lauded as a founder of interaction design. He’s the author of a book on the subject and we’ve had the honor of his company over beers in the courtyard in front of our workspace. I can’t wait to see this film.

A Primer of Design-as-Art Movements

Contemporary auctions for design objects have been fetching prices that rival great artworks. These pieces are typically sitting on the same auction block. Where can one draw the line between a utilitarian design object and an artistic expression? Probably in the production quantity. Limited edition pieces by sought-after designers have the singularity of fine art, although the purpose of limited edition design objects can typically be attributed to bumping up a price tag.

There’s a good synopsis of five design-as-art movements at ARTINFO. They touch upon The Wiener Werkstätte, The Bauhaus, American Studio, Memphis, and Functional Art.
