ONull is written in Java and uses Processing as a graphical engine. Awesome vector generator that rasterizes an image to give you a vector output file. You can choose the squares, crosses, circles, etc. or you can import your own vector to use as the "pixels." Excellent tool.

Finding the average color in an image by David Goligorsky

Just thinking about a project and quickly found this free online tool by Wise Geek that finds the average color in an image. Seems to be good! I've done things like this in MATLAB before, but it's unnecessarily complicated and Photoshop doesn't seem to have a good way to do this... please comment if you have a better solution. Check out this "record player" iPhone app. The author, Theodore Watson, threw it together in one morning. I really like projects that get the point across quickly. I subscribed to Ambidextrous, Stanford University's Journal of Design. The magazine is edited by the Stanford Design community and receives content from contributors around the world. It's a very well-done publication and I would recommend subscribing if you are a designer, engineer, scientist, anthropologist, interaction, UX, HCI, or really anything else because you're bound to find these articles worthwhile. Reading through issue nine, I was particularly impressed by a robot designed by Hideki Kozima in Kyoto and programmed at Carnegie Mellon by Marek Michalowski. It is known as Keepon (from Japanese kee for yellow and pon for bobbing). ...

So Google just released a beta version of their Chrome browser without offering software for Mac OSX and Linux users. That fact was the content of my previous post. This is one major example of companies doing their product testing in the marketplace. Here's a post from the official Google blog regarding the application. There's even a cartoon introduction of the new software. Screenshots available here. The beta software should become available today at 11am PDT for Windows users. Mac OSX and Linux users will have to wait for their release. Challenging user interface and miserable keyboard layout... on the bright side, it is rugged, the mechanical aspects of the case and swiveling screen are great, and the $100 price point it fantastic. For its intended purpose of spreading the availability of information and education to children of developing countries, it's a great start!

Core77 pointed me to a NYT article about San Francisco's ambitious plan to install smart sensors in parking spots. With the proliferation of smartphones, the high price of gas, and the mounting road rage associated with city driving, these smart parking sensors are just in time. Dasher changes the paradigm of text entry from pushing buttons to navigating through words.
