Dasher changes the paradigm of text entry from pushing buttons to navigating through words. I have liked the idea of making buildings out of shipping containers since I saw the first example of this with the Freitag shop in Zurich. Container City(TM) offers to plan and build structures using shipping containers. They have a nice gallery. FabPreFab is a website that offers a listing of prefabricated modernist homes including more information about shipping container architecture.

Paul Rand (August 15, 1914 – November 26, 1996) was a graphic designer best known for creating the corporate identities of IBM, UPS, and the NeXT computer (the company founded by Steve Jobs after leaving Apple in 1985 with director Ross Perot!) Paul Rand is also known for writing the children's book "Little 1" with Ann Rand, which you can preview and buy at Amazon.

George Nelson: Lesser known textiles by David Goligorsky

George Nelson is best known for his furniture and clocks, but he has some excellent textile designs as well. The design is attributed to both George Nelson and Irving Harper. Irving Harper has been getting some attention on the blogosphere lately. Design*Sponge had picked up some images of his incredible midcentury modern home. Matte Stevens, an incredible artist in his own right, has had a number of conversations with Mr. Harper including a visit to his home.

While the previous Braun Design/Dieter Rams post is still warm: The 2007 iPhone calculator GUI "borrows" heavily from the 1977 design of the Braun ET44 and ET66 calculators (ET = elektronischer taschenrechner = electronic calculator.) Cake fork, sugar spoon, and tea stirrer. Materials include silver and gold. Katja Bremkamp's work is exquisitely understated. I also like the Plate with Numbers, which has small numbers representing the number of times cutlery will come into contact with the plate. (via grijs)
