  I have recently come upon the works of Olle Eksell. I think they are very beautiful and resonate with the aesthetic of Paul Rand. I haven't seen much information about the artist other than the fact that he is Swedish by birth which made it difficult at the time to study graphic design as educational resources were lacking for this field of study. Eksell died in April 2007 and there is an obituary in English by AGI. (via Happy Mundane)

  I like the playful nature of Maarten Baas' furniture designs. The most immediately striking designs are in his "clay furniture" series (bench shown below). These pieces have a metal skeleton and clay skin, which is applied by hand. There's also the "smoke" series which involves torching some wood furniture, then putting out the flames and coating the remnants in a clear epoxy coating.   Woke up in the lobby wearing nothing but five strategically placed cupcakes. Eyes feel like olives stabbed with little cocktail swords. -The Pinprick I know I've written about Fireland before, but it should be generally known how much we've been enjoying the Pinprick immensely recently. The answer's "immensely," by the way. There's a strange resonance between the Pinprick and More regrettable incidents in a life filled with bitter remorse, by David Fullarton. The former is peevish, the latter sullen. Together they are perfect company during an evening of brooding and Wahrsteiner Dunkel.

  I visited a friend in Philadelphia several months ago and at some point, I had the urge for some ice cream. You know how it gets. My friend took me to Franklin Fountain (No. 116 Market Street. Phila. PA 19106) where I was enchanted by original architectural details, the mustach'd service gentlemen, and most importantly, the hand-made ice cream. Their website is similarly fantastic and tells the story of how the two founding brothers purchased the space in 2003 from "Eroticakes."
