Check out this “record player” iPhone app. The author, Theodore Watson, threw it together in one morning. I really like projects that get the point across quickly. It’s a build-to-think mode and sparks dialogue (like this blog post) that gets people thinking about how to use what’s around them.

Gary Hustwit’s “Objectified” film

Gary Hustwit, the director known for his documentary film on the Swiss typeface, Helvetica, has just released a first glimpse of his latest work. He’s spent considerable time interviewing product design’s heads of state and put together Objectified.

I’m especially inspired because in just 90 seconds of preview, there were a few familiar faces. David Kelley, a co-founder of IDEO, is an alumnus from my graduate program and is a major part of the Stanford Design program and d.school. We have had the pleasure of visiting his incredible home, which was designed by Ettore Sottsass, and saw the garage, which houses part of his collection of fantastic vehicles. Bill Moggridge is another co-founder of IDEO and is lauded as a founder of interaction design. He’s the author of a book on the subject and we’ve had the honor of his company over beers in the courtyard in front of our workspace. I can’t wait to see this film.

Wes Anderson Commercial Starring Brad Pitt

The latest Wes Anderson commercial, this time for Japan’s SoftBank Mobile, involves a Mr. Brad Pitt in a yellow pith helmet fussing about during a particularly dense bit of action, strongly reminiscent of Jacques Tati’s 1953 Les Vacances de Monseieur Hulot. The song is Poupée de cire, poupée de son by France Gall.

Perpenduum regulars will note the use of the Citroën 2CV.

Internet Killed the Video Star

MTV posts every music video online!

This news comes as a surprise because I had thought that MTV had nothing to do with music since the mid-90’s. Maybe someone at headquarters found the key to that hitherto “secret closet” and discovered that they used to do music videos and thought it would be real “throw-back” to post them on the internet.

Sarcasm aside, good job. It’s amazing to have this archive available.

Clap Your Brains Off

This is the music video for Clap Your Brains Off, the first single by No Somos Machos Pero Somos Muchos (NSM PSM).

Interestingly, the video was shot by Frank Beltrán using only a Canon EOS-1D Mark III, a digital SLR with no ostensible video mode. It can, however, shoot 10 frames per second (which explains the jerky footage on the otherwise smooth Vimeo) for about 10 seconds.

I subscribed to Ambidextrous, Stanford University’s Journal of Design. The magazine is edited by the Stanford Design community and receives content from contributors around the world. It’s a very well-done publication and I would recommend subscribing if you are a designer, engineer, scientist, anthropologist, interaction, UX, HCI, or really anything else because you’re bound to find these articles worthwhile.

Reading through issue nine, I was particularly impressed by a robot designed by Hideki Kozima in Kyoto and programmed at Carnegie Mellon by Marek Michalowski. It is known as Keepon (from Japanese kee for yellow and pon for bobbing). This robot is designed for interaction with humans, particularly children with developmental disorders such as autism. The little yellow dancing robot has been able to elicit social behavior from autistic children that was impossible to achieve from directed human interaction. Keepon has a microphone in it’s “nose” and two cameras for eyes along with four degrees of mechanical freedom that allow it to rotate, bob, pitch, and yaw. The software processes visual and auditory stimuli that allow the Keepon to invent dances when it hears music and engage eye contact with people, as well as other seemingly intelligent responses.

No, they’re not for sale unfortunately, but Keepon has danced to a song by Spoon on YouTube, leading to its debut acting role in an official Spoon music video.

This little yellow dancing robot has melded high tech, human interaction, emotional response, and high value seamlessly. I really hope this robot reaches the mass market.

Bruce Nussbaum on product testing in the marketplace

So Google just released a beta version of their Chrome browser without offering software for Mac OSX and Linux users. That fact was the content of my previous post. This is one major example of companies doing their product testing in the marketplace. The trend of early adopters as unpaid software testers was one of the major messages in BusinessWeek innovation writer Bruce Nussbaum’s interview with David Armano of Critical Mass (no, not the overly-political and generally-counter-productive bicycle thing.)

This is something I should have written a long time ago… I wanted to congratulate my friends at Red Bucket Films for their fantastic debut feature film, which had debuted at SXSW ‘08, won the 2008 Independent Vision Award at the Sarasota Film Festival, given the honor of closing the Cannes Directors Fortnight (La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), purchased by IFC, and shown at the LA Film Festival, among other honors which I must have missed.

A well-deserved bravo!

Fantastic short film by Galen Summer about Martin Greenfield, a bespoke tailor in Brooklyn. He immigrated from Germany in the late 1940’s after the war and losing his family in a concentration camp. Persevering the rough neighborhood where his factory would be pillaged for the copper in his electrical wires, he has found himself making suits for many dignitaries, US Presidents included. He has also done ample work for the fantastic labels of Freeman’s Sporting Club, Band of Outsiders, and Brooks Brothers, among others. A tastefully-shot documentary of an inspiring Gentleman.
